Condition: Good copy, the book is once restored, usual rust, french title page has a small strip cut away, but neat, rare item.

Old 19th century edition of the Holy Book of Islam in the translation of the "Attorney at the Supreme Court of the Dutch East Indies. With "bijvoeging van Aanteekeningen en Ophelderingen der voornaamste uitleggers en voorafgegaan van Eene Levensschets (short biography) van Mahomed." In contemporary half leather book binding with gold-stamped title on the spine.

¶ This was the first new Dutch translation of the al-quran since almost 150 years and, according to the compiler Ludovicus Jacobus Antonius Tollens (1820-1874), even the first sound interpretation of it at all. Quote from the introduction "To the reader" (about the culture and criminal law of: "Muselmen") "Certainly theft is - and the reason for this must be sought in the predatory and thief-like character of the Arabs [sic] - the most severe punishment , since this crime is punished with the truncation of one's hand. "
