¶ The blurb was written by G.K. van het Reve. The folk writer was for many years a patient and friend of the Amsterdam general practitioner Jan Groothuyse (1922-1983) who obtained his doctorate in 1970 with this dissertation. Gerard Reve published his correspondence in Brieven aan mijn lijfarts (1991). Groothuyse and Reve also shared depression; the doctor took his own life at the age of 61.
