Hardback first edition, rebound sometime in the 20th century and fitted with a new blue cloth binding in which the front cover of the original binding was professionally integrated. The interior was also repaired, saving one of the flyleaves, which bears a name and date in contemporary handwriting ('22 December 1925'). Rare item in any condition.

¶ This children's book based on the 17th century account of a journey to the East Indies commissioned by the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) has been reprinted and translated countless times in English, German and Frisian (the English translation Java Ho! was censored for violence and racism). The book was made into a film in 2007. In Hoorn, on the quay wall near the Hoofdtoren (near a bust of skipper Bontekoe) there are statues of the three 'scheepsjongens' (cabin boys), peering over the water.
