Literary fairy tale by Frederik van Eeden (1860-1932) about a boy who is taken away by the fairy Windekind. Illustrated with an etched plate by the artist Jan Veth (1864-1925). Hardback FIRST EDITION. Van Eeden wrote a sequel (in 1905) and a third volume (in 1906).

¶ Cf. Beijers 1; Aardse 42; Braches p. 151-154 and 497 (all show later editions). One of the first expressions of Symbolism and 'Nieuwe Kunst' in book design. The real first edition in Veth's Art Nouveau binding is quite rare. Later (onwards from 1898) it was Edzard Koning who designed the book covers for De Kleine Johannes.
