Condition: Excellent- see more info below.

The first novel by Willem Elsschot (Alfons de Ridder, 1882-1960). Hardback fourth [= actually 6th] printing, published in December 1945. A dust jacket (with acclaim of Jan Greshoff) should accompany this edition.

¶ Cf. Schumacher A6. The circulation consisted of approximately 6000 bound copies. The first edition of Elsschot's autobiographical debut (about the four years that Elsschot spent in a family pension in Paris) was published in 1913.

This copy is complete with the rare dust jacket that is usually missing due to the fragile WW2 paper. It has been professionally (and virtually invisible on the outside) restored by master bookbinder Hans Zegveld and is now protected in a (removable) acid-free Brodart cover. Very DESIRABLE Elsschotiana!
