¶ Cf. Van Faassen p. 104 (Van Beest 2). BOEFJE (1903) was the - second to - first publication of WL & J. Brusse's Uitgeversmaatschappij (brothers of the writer) and thanks to the success of this boys' book (in the style of Pietje Bell and Ciske de Rat) they were also able to invest in other books to publish. The theater version also drew full houses. In 1935 the piece was performed for the 500th time. The lead role was for Annie van Ees, the director's wife, who would also take on that role in the 1939 film adaptation.
