¶ It was not easy for Mulisch to make his debut. The manuscript for 'Tussen hamer en aambeeld' was refused by publishers for five years. He succeeded only after he won the Reina Prinsen Geerligsprijs in 1951 for the manuscript of 'Archibald Strohalm'. His official independent debut 'Tussen hamer en aambeeld' was published in September 1952, a month before his debut novel.
