¶ Sergei Paradzjanov (Armenian: Sarkis Hovsepi Paradzjanjan) invented his own film style that differed sharply from socialist realism, the only permitted art style in the Soviet Union. His films were therefore banned and he himself was repeatedly imprisoned by the Russian authorities.

Paradzhanov started his career as a director in 1954, but he later labeled his entire oeuvre before 1964 as 'junk'. He made his international breakthrough with the direction of the 1964 film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (renamed Wild Horses of Fire for most foreign distributions). Among his admirers are great directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese. There is a Parajanov Institute in Beverly Hills, California (USA).
