Series of luxurious 19th century overview works, each volume containing 40 biographies of contemporary French artists (genre painters, military art, specialists in nude paintings, landscapes, portraits and sculpture). Illustrated with reproductions of drawings and sketches and always 'quarante planches en photogravure'; deep photographic prints of paintings by Goupil & Cie. Decorated pages and lettering by G. Fraipont. With list of illustrations and table of contents. Numbered edition of 650 copies. Bound in red half leather bindings with decorative paper covers, five ribs and gold-plated titles on the spine. Later, in 1884, a fourth volume appeared with various painters.
