Pedrick (1863-1941) to set up gold mining on the banks of the Maroni River in Suriname at the end of the 19th century, around 1900, with the help of a railway through the jungle. The book deals i.a. with the bush negroes, the birds, jaguars, insects and poisonous snakes.
