Condition: Good - with wear, spine somewhat damaged; interior heavily browned on some places. This is only the first part. With nice ex-libris on first cover.

Large 4to format collection of poems by one of the greatest Dutch poets of the Golden Age: Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687). Illustrated with engraved half title (showing Hermes / Mercury) by Romeyn de Hooghe, woodcut (Elias and the birds) on title page and copper engraving portrait of Huygens (by Abraham Blotelingh after Caspar Netscher) with texts by Nicolaus Heinsius and Joost van den Vondel.

Present are also two fold-out prints by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708); Zee-straet (26 x 32 cm., browned, damaged) and map of Hofwyck (42 x 35 cm., loose, very browned and brittle paper). With table of contents. Contains, among others, Kostelick Mal en Voor-hout and a farce titled Tryntje Cornelis. Spaensche Wysheit is bilingual Spanish and Dutch.

Issued in the 'Rampjaar 1672', this early revised edition is bound in original full leather binding with gilt decoration on the covers and five raised bands and title shield on the spine. The book has wear and the spine is somewhat battered but very attractive antique item. The table of contents was annotated in manuscript in the 19th century.

¶ Constantijn Huygens, secretary to two Princes of Orange, was the father of the statesman and physicist Constantijn Huygens Jr. and the brilliant physicist and mathematician Christiaan Huygens. A literary prize has been named after Huygens, the Constantijn Huygens-prijs and the Huygens Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis.
